When most people first hear the name “Malibu” their thoughts turn to surf, sand and sunsets over the sea. Barbara Horton and her daughter, Jennifer Horton-Chrisman, were no different. The Horton family moved to Malibu with visions of running in the surf alongside their dogs while the sun set over the Pacific. But true Malibu natives know there is more to this exclusive enclave. Barbara and her husband brought their two young daughters to Malibu in 1978. They moved to Serra Retreat, a perfect blend of beach and canyon living. While the family enjoyed being within walking distance of Surfrider beach, they equally reveled in walks up the canyon along Malibu Creek. The area provided a safe haven for the girls and the aesthetic atmosphere encouraged their imaginations to blossom. It allowed Barbara to enjoy community activities, and it was the perfect environment for Jennifer to pursue her interest in dance and acting.

A True Professional

Barbara started a career in New York with TIAA-CREF, a non-profit organization serving the pension needs of teachers in higher education. Her 17-year tenure at TIAA-CREF—where she became the youngest woman ever to be appointed an officer of this multi-billion dollar company—taught her that serving others was tremendously rewarding. Many years later, when Barbara began a second career in real estate, she brought with her the need to help others that was instilled in her during her years with TIAA-CREF. With Barbara, service is truly an instinct developed when she served higher education and later as a mother.

Barbara was recognized as a top performer by the trustees of TIAA-CREF, and it’s no different in her career today. Her degree in economics from Hunter College and her background in New York give her a sophisticated perspective of the current marketplace and a strong desire to serve those she represents.

A World of Experience

Like her mother, Jennifer exhibited advanced skill in math as well as science. Though she was outgoing, her interest in acting waned and she dove into academics. Later, she enrolled in an overseas program that offered her a semester in England and she jumped at the chance. She traveled through Europe and Russia and immersed herself in the cultures.

When she returned home, she quickly graduated from UCLA, earning a degree in economics. After college, her career blossomed in the property management and construction industries. As a mother herself, Jennifer is now taking on the role her own mother did—she’s a successful real estate professional with an innate nurturing touch and an ability to sense the needs of others.
